We went to the Woodlawn Zoo yesterday. It's a nice zoo. It started life as an early example of vertical integration. The owner of the zoo also owned a streetcar line. The zoo was at the end of the line. Ulrika says he may also have owned some real estate, and thus folks would head out to the area, and perhaps decide to buy a lot.

After breakfast at the Bay Cafe (a fisherman's hangout) where the portions were huge. I ordered the seafood omellete as a scramble. Dungeness, scallops, and bay shrimp with tomatoes, green onions, cheese and hollandaise stirred into about five eggs. I age a bit more than half, about a third of my hash browns (which weren't quite as good as those at the B&O, but worth writing home about). I sipped a bit of [personal profile] akirlu's oj, and got one for myself.

Because it's a hangout for fishermen (the fleet is right out the window) there is lots of fsh on the menu, and the coffee service was aggressive. I think the first refill came at about two swallows.

I took about 200 pictures, playing with all sorts of the quirks on my camera. The bracket functions are nice, the use of white balance to change the quality of light (using white balance can make shade into washed sunlight), as well as popping a tungsten gel to color correct (which cools the lights temperature and makes it feel warmer) to the flash.

I was able to show [personal profile] libertango why one uses flash on birds, even when there is enough light. It brings out the irredescence of the feathers, and some other tricks.

Maia will know, in a couple of weeks, what her Kodachrome looks like.

Daddy's taking us to the zoo tomorrow is the gallery. The gallery has thumbs, the thumbs lead to a picture, and for those of you who want to see the whole megilla, click on the picture again.

Be warned, they are big.

Grabbed the last copy of the Chieftains CD in Borders last night. Thanks for the recommendation, it's awesome!

If you are satisfied with any of the photos you took Saturday night at J and A's with me in them I should like to see them. I have lots of photos of my friends and very few of me.

Your zoo photos have great color balance. That's a hell of a camera in the right hands, obviously.

Thank you.

I have a couple of shots which are ok. The image size will be about 2mb, so tell me where you want them sent, and I will send them.

huntzinger at mindspring dot com, thank you. The image size isn't a problem.

Great pictures. I like scratching lion especially.

BTW, it's the Woodland Park Zoo (which has the best possible url: http://zoo.org/). I haven't been in years. Must do something about that.

Yeah, I recalled that I was misrembering the name this morning, as we ate at Mae's.

I may toss up another few pictures, there are some nice hippo shots. A friend tells me I can probably sell a couple to the zoo (which, as you say has the best URL a zoo could have). The bird, in particular because they don't have any seem to have any shots of that one.

Those were so beautiful!

I think you have inspired me to seek out a worthy zoo to visit...it's been sooo long! :)
