I am actually sort of sorry to be leaving. My hosts have been splendid, they could not have better been. I was made welcome, and given both company and freedom of the city.

The panel went well. I think I can say that I am a decent speaker. Theater in high school and college, debate in college, 15 years of teaching in the army (both informally, and, "from the platform"). It was a sympathetic crowd and I was the "dancing bear", that person whom they were all wondering about (the interrogator who doesn't believe in torture).

There weren't as many people as one might have hoped. I made a guesstimate, from the dias, that it was about 200. The official estimate was about 150. But there were a lot of people there to see about how to get the word out. We retired afterwards to pizza (Chicago deep dish) and beer, and chat. It broke about 10:00, and I went up to do the majority of my packing.

So I'm waiting on my ride, enjoying the sunlight, and the cicadas, and feeling both a trifle melancholy, and happy. Tonight I'll be back in SF, and next week I go back to school, but for the moment I am at rest.

You're a terrific speaker, on this subject and just about any other that you know so well. It's great seeing you shine, in your element.

I'd be a trifle melancholy too. Chicago's deep dish pizza is nonpareil.
