Heading home
Sep. 14th, 2009 09:18 amI am actually sort of sorry to be leaving. My hosts have been splendid, they could not have better been. I was made welcome, and given both company and freedom of the city.
The panel went well. I think I can say that I am a decent speaker. Theater in high school and college, debate in college, 15 years of teaching in the army (both informally, and, "from the platform"). It was a sympathetic crowd and I was the "dancing bear", that person whom they were all wondering about (the interrogator who doesn't believe in torture).
There weren't as many people as one might have hoped. I made a guesstimate, from the dias, that it was about 200. The official estimate was about 150. But there were a lot of people there to see about how to get the word out. We retired afterwards to pizza (Chicago deep dish) and beer, and chat. It broke about 10:00, and I went up to do the majority of my packing.
So I'm waiting on my ride, enjoying the sunlight, and the cicadas, and feeling both a trifle melancholy, and happy. Tonight I'll be back in SF, and next week I go back to school, but for the moment I am at rest.

Date: 2009-09-14 09:22 pm (UTC)Yup, Chicago Deep Dish Pizza can be marvelous. (And I say that despite my devotion to pizza that's mostly bread-dough with with just a little stuff on top.)
If you ever get the chance, don't miss the Sunday (?) morning brunch buffet at Algauers (? sp.) resort hotel not far from Chicago (it's on the edge of a forest preserve, with the city visible across a stretch of water). (I was there for a Ditto -- fanzine fan convention -- some decades ago.) If memory serves (though it may well be subject to exaggeration) there were 14 different kinds of herring, 17 different kinds of salmon, at least ten egg-based dishers....
