I was trying to limit myself to not posting until the last piece of trip report is finished, but it's taking more work/mental energy than I seem to have.

And then I see something which can't wait.

Clergy being asked/trained to "quell dissent" in event of martial law

I can't think of anything coherent, save that it might be time to make sure one has lots of powder to keep dry.

"because the government's established by the Lord, you know. And, that's what we believe in the Christian faith. That's what's stated in the scripture."

Remind me again, who was running things when Christ was crucified? Oh, right, the government, which was established by the... uh... Yahweh?

You can be on the distract/seduce and provide moral support team. More valuable in the rear than where you can be caught.

About all I can do is provide quiet support, alas. This, I think, is the absofuckinglutely worst I've felt about being physically unable to *do* things - and it's been bad, and low, and severe depression months.

Yep. You're needed.

Can I watch yours instead? It sounds a lot more fun. I've spent a long time in the, "expendable" category, and am used to thinking of myself that way.

When all it said and done I don't feel all that special, there are lots of people who say the things I say better than I do, so where (god forbid) I might be more useful than they is in the realm of actually shooting at people; and there are lots of people who can do that.

I don't see myself as a Grant, or a Washington.

Well, you know, you're a smart man, you're entitled to a Weird Idea or two. Just don't go taking that one too seriously, all right?

The rest of us reserve the right to know better.

I don't see myself as a Grant, or a Washington.

No, you're a [livejournal.com profile] pecunium. And therefore irreplaceable.
From: [identity profile] pecunium.livejournal.com
Well, by those lights we are all irreplaceable (and too true).

I had this conversation with [profile] xopher_vh on Making Light sometime back. I take that one as seriously as I need to; and being a crusty-old sergeant, in a "combat multiplier" position, I am pretty low on the expend list.

Given my druthers, I intend to die in bed; shot by the irate husband not desired.

Oh yeah, how did you let your behind get bruised?

And such things aren't "unaesthetic" they are signs of an active life and impart character and distinction to an otherwise merely notable fundament.

Someone posted, quite a while back, about gov't "disaster preparedness training for clergy," which basically focused on a bunch of bible verses about following instructions, doing what you're told, and acknowledging that God put the government in power. She'd posted scans of the pages they handed out, with underlined sections.

The training sessions were apparently oblivious to the concept that many clergyfolk aren't Christian; the Muslims, Jews and Buddhists present were rather put out by the whole thing.

I can't remember if it was [livejournal.com profile] sunfell or [livejournal.com profile] ebonypearl, or was posted at [livejournal.com profile] dark_christian. A quick look through calendars & tags didn't find it.

I'm pretty convinced that this is real, in that it makes almost too much sense not to be. However, that PDF is .. very inconclusive. It looks to me like basic disaster prep seminar notes mixed in with one church's clergy notes about general stress and life event management.

Is anyone really surprised? Certain elements of the Christian church have been hand in glove with this Administration all along, and one of the ways BushCo has kept power is by riding HARD on the "man of God" angle. Not to mention that corrupting the clergy was one of the ways the slaves were kept in line, back before the Civil War... why abandon a useful tool?

I thought I'd caught a sniff of this from somewhere - sad to see it backed up by a more reasonable source. Not that I'm terribly surprised, but in the current climate I'm not really sure what would surprise me.

You know, combined with the pending repeal of the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 slated to take effect in October, this administration is really doing everything possible to scare me...

It feels like we're living in the first 15 minutes of a Jerry Bruckheimer movie.

Such clergy response teams would walk a tight-rope during martial law between the demands of the government on the one side, versus the wishes of the public on the other

And it's probably not chance that the demands and wishes of one's deity are left out of this dilemma. I seem to recall, vaguely, something about the difficulty of two masters, but I don't think the proper Christian response was to ditch God?
