Things change.

I was in high school and college when Johnny Depp came on the scene. Even accepting Crybaby as a decent piece of work, it was easy to dismiss him. Crybaby after all, was a John Waters film.

But he had talent. More to the point, he tended it. He made some clunkers (Willie Wonka wasn't right), but Bennie and Joon, What's Eating Glibert Grape, Edward Scissorhands, they put him into that class of actors whom I see are in something, and I get interested.

So finding out that he did Sweeney Todd, was thrilling. Assuming that the songs would be at least decently done, I am looking forward to his presentation of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Then I hear word that the boy can sing.

Then I hear Alan Rickman (whom we have to forgive Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves) will be playing Judge Turpin, and Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett.

I'll make a point to see this one on the big screen.

I know folks think of Rickman mostly as Snape, but I think of him mostly as his finest character:

I think of him as lots of things Hans, the voice in Tubular Bells II, Marsden, Tybalt, but mostly...

I respectfully disagree about Willy Wonka. It's a creepy sort of story, and a creepy yet ultimately sympathetic character, which is exactly the kind of thing at which Depp excels. I was never more than lukewarm about the sanitized Gene Wilder version, but I loved Depp's take on the character.

I agree with you. I adore Gene Wilder, but didn't like that version. Depp is seriously creepy, yet you do sympathize with him.

Interestingly, I just finished watching The Ninth Gate, with Depp as an unscrupulous book dealer. I'd forgotten how good he was in that movie.

Very much looking forward to The Barber of Fleet Street! What a great cast!

FORGIVE HIM for Robin Hood?????

thank heavens he chose to be in it - or I would have been dragged to the movie for nothing - yes I do see some of the most abominable movies just to spend time w/ people who I like except for their taste in films - and I have seen some memorable cinematography and performances in otherwise deplorable efforts -
