In three weeks we are taking a trip.

The plan was to pack with the mules around Zion.

Not gonna happen, something about fires.

So we are going to trailer camp our way up the coast. About 250 miles a day, then a day, or maybe two, and then again for the road.

Montana de Oro (near Morro Bay)

Point Reyes.

And points north.

We might (I hope so) make it so far as Seattle. I think the plan is about ten days.

Then Maia has a week of school. Then we take off for the Galapagos, for a week. She'll be going on to a week of steam trains in Ecuador, and I'll head home to the animals and the plants.

Have a great time! I was just up at Point Reyes and Bodega Bay recently (while staying for a week at Dillon Beach) and they were both well worth the trip. Lighthouse, elk preserve, etc.

Galapagos!! I'm jealous on so many levels, including the whole "fan of the O'Brian books" thang. Pretty please - share pics!

Honestly, I'm jealous too.

I can't tell you how long I've wanted to go there. I'm one of the few people I know who've read Origin of Species.

Add the O'Brian books, and what was an urge, a wistful desire, well it happened that adding a trip to the islands wasn't such a big deal.

At that point I wanted in. The trains were nice, but not worth the money to me. The Galapagos? Which might be closed to all but researchers (which was what I thought the case to be, until recently)... No way I was going to miss it.

There will be photos.

well, you can add me to the list of people you "know" who ahve read Origin of Species , but then, I am a biologist. VERY envious of the Galapagos trip.

be prepared for fog & wind at Pt. Reyes -- we've had unseasonably warm weather up this way for a few days, but it won't last.

Yeah, well that's a special case.

One of the things my deployment screwed up was reading Steven Jay Gould's last book. I have it, but it's in a box, and I don't know which one.

We know the weather. Maia and I lived in SLO for almost three years, I've lived north of the bay. I'm hoping we miss wind, fog's not so bad for some of the photography I do.

if you're passing through seattle and have a little time to kill, feel free to drop me a line. I'd like to buy you a drink.

If we make it to Seattle, I suspect there are a few people we have to see.

It may involve descending on a pub, lest we impose on friends to the point of requiring a party.

I'll keep you informed.

Looking forward to all your pics! A few years back I introduced my sister to Point Reyes (where she captured me on film with sideways hair) and other cool places in N. Cal.

If you make it up to Eureka, there's a trail called the Boy Scout Tree Trail in the Jebediah Smith Redwoods State Park that is one of my favorite places in the world. It's a 7 mile fairly easy out and back into the redwoods, and it shouldn't take more than three hours.

The post that described it got eaten, but it's wonderful.

The post leading up to it, though, is still here, and it talked a little about driving up the coast.

I'd second that as a MUST SEE if you haven't been there. Jed Smith is one of the gems of the State Park system, and you should be able to get in some river rafting as well.

River rafting (much as I like it) isn't on the cards; there's no way to leave the horses alone for that long; and the people interested in rafting, rather than riding, are few.

Your timing for getting to Seattle sounds suspiciously like it's going to coincide with my allergy purdah, which starts August 18th.

You have too many people to see up here anyway.... damn.

Oh, and you can add me to the people who have read Origin of Species. It's a pretty fast read.
