Yes, it's that book meme.

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

The handle, set low, was was again of rattan binding with leather to give grip. Most yumi were lacquered black, as with sword saya, both to strengthen it and as a protection from moisture. The tsuru, or string, was made of plant fibre, usually hemp, and coated with wax.

Feel free to do this on your LJ, or just post here.

But then, there are those who have claimed that tasting the fish is akin to communing with the gods. On reflection, that can't be true. I've communed with the gods, and eating at Valabar's is a much richer, more rewarding, and more enlightening experience.

This is the first round where I've happened to be reading fiction. =)

It does not mean volunteering information about hidden jewels to a burglar. On the other hand, we must recognize that most of us have been encouraged to be confused about living authentically almost from the day we were born. Most of us were raised and educated in ways that make an appreciation of authenticity exceedingly difficult.

"They are touchy questions, and there is no shortage of materials in all the media dealing with them. Let's consider simply the economic questions, which are not controversial

"I am certain that even the most Ramboesque and militant among us all agree that violence in society costs us money, money that could be spent to expand the economy, money that could be used for investment and rebuilding, money that could be used to reduce the tax burden, money that could be used to improve the environment, money that could go to research and development in the sciences and arts."

To meet Swiss requirements for its Hornets, the F404-GE-402 Enhanced Performance Engine(EPE) was developed and became the standard powerplant on all Hornets from 1992.

The manual for the new SB-600 flash was closer than the Encyclopedia of Modern Military Aircraft, but it stopped at page 92. If I'd tried to use any of the ebooks I have that are actually on the PC, I'd have been here forever trying to pick one.

[(For some flavor of "sentence".) Okay, I finally broke down and got one of these newfangled Digital Cameras (Canon PowerShot S3 IS) and a (not-especially-good) For Dummies book to try to get some idea of how to use it, before the upcoming WorldCon. (I've had SLR & 35 mm cameras in the far-distant past, but the auto-focus and digital aspects are new. I expect the main problem will be that the software requires OSX, and the last time I tried shifting to that (from OS 9.2) on my Macintosh was semi-disastrous.... but that can be put off until after the Con.) Normally, the closest book would be an ethnic or historical mystery, or science-fiction.

Well, the Hayden Elgin book was the closest.

Right now the working stack is about eight deep. Since we've been moving, the real stacks are all in boxes, so it's all new acquisitions.

On the railroad tracks, the time unification scheme rolled even more swiftly. Some southerners briefly rebelled with a system tailored to their needs, but their move was crushed. When Allen and the railroad presidents, managers, passenger agents, and superintendants met for their General Time Convention on 11 April 1883 in St Louis, Missouri, railroad sentiment seemed to have turned toward the change to an hour system divided along the 75th, 90th and 105th meridian lines.

use strict;

This gave me a chuckle. It's a perl book, and page 123 is all code. So I picked the fifth line, instead of teh fifth sentence. For some reason, when I saw it, I thought, "That sounds about right."

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the Lord, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts. Six days shalll work be done: but the seventh shall be the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the Lord in your dwellings.

Leviticus 23:1-3. King James Version.

It was either that or The Joy of Cooking, they were pretty much equidistant.
