Some linkage
Dec. 30th, 2004 12:28 pmI did it. I went back as far as LJ will let one (1,000 posts). The next time I will start at the back, since I knwow I lost at least fifty because of new things written while I was rading back. Perhaps a forward timeline will seem better too, though I have gotten used to the reverse flow of things.
Before I hack out my observations on the trip, and the holidays, I thought I might share a few thigs I found, trolling back though all those LJ posts, and the secondary links from same.
Nick Coleman: The gospel truth about some readers I suppose the verse of the Gospels which comes most to mind, when I see things like this, is
Mat 7:21
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
In a similar vein (that of the response of those who disagree with those who express dissent from the oficial policy) Some Readers Want to Lock Up Al Neuharth
Some choice bits from the responses Boots Harvey, Brentwood, CA: “One must recall that Churchill had to put up with the likes of Lord Haw-Haw, William Joyce, and his propaganda during WWII. In the end William Joyce was executed for giving aid and comfort to the enemy during war time. Would that the same fate befall Al Neuharth!”
Duggan Flanakin, Austin, Texas: “Neuharth should be tried for treason along with a lot of other blowhards who should be spending their energies condemning the barbarism of our enemies, the same people who destroyed the Twin Towers.“ (thus being wrong twice).
What was Neuarth's treason? They can only dream of holidays at home
My saddest Christmases came when I was ages 19, 20 and 21 serving in the Army in World War II....
At age 80, I'd gladly volunteer for such highly moral duty again. But if I were eligible for service in Iraq, I would do all I could to avoid it. I would have done the same during the Vietnam War, as many of the politically connected did.
"Support Our Troops" is a wonderful patriotic slogan. But the best way to support troops thrust by unwise commanders in chief into ill-advised adventures like Vietnam and Iraq is to bring them home. Sooner rather than later. That should be our New Year's resolution."
What amuses, in a wry sort of way, is wondering who; among these hawks, is stepping up to the plate (i.e. enlisting, or encouraging thier kids to enlist). Neuwath has a Bronze Star, and campaign medals from both the European, and Pacific Theaters in WW2.
If one want's to keep abusing one's spouse all one need do, In Wash. state, is see to it she's pregnant (I suppose an abusive woman could keep herself pregnant, but it also strikes me as a less likely situation). Divorce revoked This was done, ostensibly, for the good of the child. Me, I guess I'm shortsighted, but I fail to see the good being perpetrated by this sort of family value (and try as I might, I can't see that this is a valid reading of the laws in question).
Last, but not least, the Christian Science MOnitor tells of a man who ran the actual numbers for his retirement, using the Dow Jones as his index fund, as versus what the SS trust fund earned: Social Security won.
They lied to us about the tax cuts. They lied to us about No Child Left Behind. They lied to us about the Power crisis in Calif. (in that the FERC was duty bound to let energy traders cheat them). They lied to us about the WMD, and the plans for the war. Why wouldn't they lie to us about this too?
