pecuniumI’ve been in New Jersey for a year now. It’s been a good year. Hard in some ways. I am, sort of, homesick. I am home too. The heart is divided. I’m away from many of my dearest friends. I am no more away from other dear friends than I was. So on balance, it’s sort of as if I had moved back to San Luis Obispo.
Life is good. We are still finding our rhythms; and working on how our ways of coping, or not coping, mesh. Somethings I’d wanted to do, but not done, I have been able to do. I’ve been wearing kilts since the middle of June. I found a place that had one which fit (well enough. It could be a bit smaller ‘round the waist), and from that was able to figure out what I was looking for in mail order. It’s mostly worked. I have two which are solid colors (a ‘modern’ and a trad), one of which (the trad) is a bit short, one of which (the modern) is a bit loose. But a good belt, and it stays where I want it to. The Black Watch and the US Army Plaids are both nice.
So I’ve not worn trousers out of the house in about a month. Work doesn’t care (it’s in the dress code) and most customers don’t seem to notice. I’ve not seen as many kilts here as in SF/LA/SLO, but I’ve seen a couple. With some patterns, I think making some is more than doable.
I’ve made mead. I have a mead in mind, and in a couple of weeks I’ll be putting it up (mesquite honey, a lambic yeast). All I have to do is figure out my starting gravity, and how much honey that will take, and I’m off to the races.
I’ve been remiss in figuring out how to get a degree. I have enough credits to get one granted; if I can cover the math.ladymondegreen has been a help, and she is certain that my fears about the math (I didn’t do well at it in High School) are unfounded. I may have barely passed it then, but she points out I am more focused now, and can better reason why I care; she also says that what I do with Russian, as well as the math I do understand, or sort of understand, tells her that all I need is some direction, which she is willing to do, or akawil, or jl8E, or any number of people.
So I’ll be doing that. If I have to go to a school I am now a resident. Get that out of the way, study for the GRE, fight with the VA, apply to OT schools and then I’m in it for real.
Work is ok. I still enjoy it. I’ve applied for a shift lead spot, we shall see how that plays out, since we probably need a couple before the holidays start. We are planning to go to Worldcon, and this year I might even get the real winter I was promised.
All in all, life is very good. As good as it has ever been in the past five years. With a little work (which we all seem willing to put into it) I only see it getting better. So, my friends, this is for you.
