I'm fighting with the balance of school and money. There is light at the end of the tunnel, but as of yet I don't know if it's the end, or a slow moving train. Chin up, and all, I'm not more than passing depressed (and more at the structure, than the facts. I have friends, I have hope. Someday the GI Bill will come; I know how to work beauracracies [and if I'd not learned that before, 16 years in the Army will teach anyone some of that]; I don't expect to starve).

So it's always a pleasure to read a really good takedown of an asshat.

Michael Gerson, Your Stetl Pass is Revoked

Here's the great bit, but go, read the whole thing.

What the hell, it's almost Yom Kippur, so I can always atone for my tone. But seriously: Michael Gerson needs to shut his fucking mouth before he ever even thinks accusing a Jew of insufficient vigilance against antisemitism. I don't know what lack of self-awareness convinces right-wing evangelicals that they're the true guardians of the Jews, but that condescending and parochial nonsense is its own form of antisemitism. We Tribesmen do not need some wire-rimmed enabler of one of the most destructive and inept presidents in American history to protect us from the perfidies of the world. It's us and not him who will pay the price for antisemitism, so if Gerson wants to actually act like a righteous gentile, he can start by not accusing Jews of apathy to their own people's wellbeing for the sin of not sharing his politics.

Because yeah... some moron in a comment thread is so much worse than Beck, O'Reilly, Savage, Coulter, Malkin and Limbaugh; none of whom I listen to, all of whom I can name.

[livejournal.com profile] pecunium, did you see the press release the other day about GI Bill benefit payout delays and some action of Shinseki's in regard to same? It's down the page a bit at

http://www.gibill.va.gov/

I don't know if it's relevant to your situation or not but I wanted to be sure you'd seen it. Someone I know on LJ was discussing the limitations of this new policy in a f'locked post - she's involved with higher ed admin issues and knows a lot about financial aid - and though I can't quote any of the discussion I could probably put you in touch with her if it would be useful - though she specifies that as she doesn't work for the VA she's limited in what she can say.

It does apply. I am collecting all the paperwork I need, to go up to Oakland on Friday (when the program starts) and ask some pointed questions. On the upside, apparently the BAH has gone up, so the paymens increase by 3.6 perenct, although the folks who sent the notice were a bit odd in the phrasing. I'll count those chickens when they hatch.
