Not much more to say. The last little holdover of a strange time in the nation, and tarred with th various misunderstandings of his more famous brothers (who had the advantage, insofar as public memory goes, of both dying young, and at the hand of an assassin).

It's a terrible time for him to go; because his replacement isn't likely to have the skill at managing other senators, and probably not his drive for fixing our healthcare mess.

Even more so since our wonderful legislators set things up so that the governor can't appoint a replacement, and the replacement election has to occur between 145 and 160 days from the vacancy. (Y'see, they needed to make sure they all had the time to campaign for Kerry's seat....)

His replacement won't be in office for at least six months - Massachusetts law requires a special election to fill his seat.

True, it is a terrible time to lose his vote and his skills, but his ill health had robbed us of most of that already. In death, the public option will be named for him and rammed through by any means necessary. No blue dog could vote against it and consider himself a Democrat. If the progressives are smart anyway. With luck we'll get real health care complete with clips of him promising it.
