Dilemmas

I’m conflicted.

The Dodgers, my team, have made it to the playoffs. The Yankees (who manage, every time the ump yells, “Play Ball” to be facing my second favorite team), are not. Life should be good.

But (apart from rooting, by and large, for anyone playing the Giants; save when the Giants winning would be good for the Dodgers, in which case I hope the bad guys lose) my second favorite NL team also made the play-offs. I team I have rooted for, for years.

To make it worse, the Dodgers are playing the Cubs on Weds. night. In 2004 the world dodged a bullet; for a brief moment it looked as thought the Cubs would be playing the Red Sox. Who then to root for?

By way of explanation, for those who don’t follow baseball... I was in a pub in Ayre, Mass. It’s a Sox bar. I admitted to being a Dodger fan. I was gently jeered. I pointed out 1: I was from L.A. and it’s the home team. 2: It’s National League. 3: I like the Sox just fine and 4: I hated the damned Yankees. Four guys each put a buck on the bar and bought me another Guinness.

So I like the cubbies (hey anyone can have a bad century).

So, I guess the thing to do is root for the Dodgers. If they win, I’ll be a little sad. If the Cubs win I’ll be a little sad too. If, however, the Cubs do win... I know, hands down, who I want to win the series, and that’s ok. It’s been a long time since I could root for my second favorite team without reservation.

I do believe we have the same second favorite team!

I'm a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Taken at my father's knee. He grew up then/there. Since they are no longer around, and the Yankees are the blood enemy, I stick with the sad-sack Mets.

"hey anyone can have a bad century"

As, we and all genuine baseball fans most devoutly wish, the Yankees are in the early days of.

Of course, they'll be hard pressed to live up to their record 13 World Series losses, each one a glorious event in baseball history:

2003 Florida 4, NY Yankees 2
2001 Arizona 4, NY Yankees 3
1981 Los Angeles 4, NY Yankees 2
1976 Cincinnati 4, NY Yankees 0
1964 St. Louis 4, NY Yankees 3
1963 Los Angeles 4, NY Yankees 0
1960 Pittsburgh 4, NY Yankees 3
1957 Mil. Braves 4, NY Yankees 3
1955 Brooklyn 4, NY Yankees 3
1942 St. Louis Cardinals 4, NY Yankees 1
1926 St. Louis Cardinals 4, NY Yankees 3
1922 NY Giants 4, NY Yankees 0 (one tie)
1921 NY Giants 5, NY Yankees 3

I think 1955 best sums up the Yankees' complete lack of character, don't you?

My only sadness about the Yankees not making the playoffs, is that I cannot experience the joy of watching them lose the World Series. 2001 was the best World Series I've ever seen from that perspective.

The Brewers made in as a wild card, so I'm happy.

Sox fans are very generous people, aren't they? I mean ... us. :)

(PS: I know, I owe you an email. I've been bad about trying to catch up while still under this chronic fatigue. I will write!)

S'ok. Knowing you got it makes a difference.

My other dilemma, which I didn't notice is the Angels are playing the Sox.

In that one I am rooting for the Sox, much as I like the idea of a freeway series, and terribly fond as I am of Mike Scosia.

So if the Sox win, I will lose the chance at a freeway series. Sigh.

If the Angels win, the Sox lose a chance to win another (and the poke in the eyes of the Yankees) goes away.

No matter which that one goes I (again) can be sort of happy.

This is all interesting but arcane to us over here, (although I say go Cubs, go Sox on the general position that as a sad Bears fan I support any team from Chicago) but I'm glad to see that the Mets appear to occupy the same position in all your affections that Man Utd do to all true footie fans. Oh, we lost, boo. THEY lost! It's a beautiful day. And who are in bed with Man Utd? The Mets!

I hope everyone's team(s) give them a good run for their money, and please have pity on those of us whose teams are a laughing stock.
