Obama said there are people who are bitter because of how the economy is.

He said this weeks ago. I am still hearing references to it. McCain said, just last week, that those who aren't happy with the economy are whiners.

Amazingly (because I know how swamped you've been with the outpouring of outrage about that) it's far from the worst he's said this past week.

FWIW, McCain didn't say the bit about whiners, Phil Gramm did in his capacity as McCain's top economic adviser, and Gramm has since been ditched by the campaign. At least, that's what I gathered from NPR today.

Still, not exactly been a banner week for him. To me, the Iraq withdrawal thing is the big embarrassment.

McCain was trying to distance himself from Gramm's statement, but as far as I can tell, Gramm is still his chief economic advisor. Indeed, right after McCain said that Gramm didn't speak for him, he sent him to talk to the editorial board of the WSJ about McCain's economic policies.

I'm not saying that the McCain campaign shouldn't ditch Gramm -- he's a horrible liability to them for many reasons -- just that they haven't.

You may certainly be right. I was going off what I heard on NPR on Friday. It does only make sense for McCain to distance himself, but he's made so many missteps at this point I wouldn't be surprised if he got a "Well done, Grammy" here in the near future.

The whining comment was from Phil Gramm, and McCain went to some effort to distance himself from it. So it's more like something that Wes Clark might have said, in that both were acting as surrogates for the campaigns, and both have subsequently been tossed off the bus.
