A "hacker" threatened to destroy a guy's computer, all he needed was the IP addy.

The guy gave it to him.

127.0.0.1

Those who recognise the address can see where this is going.

Did the victim also suggest the "hacker" click his heels three times?

If you follow the link you can see what happened. Summation, he sent a format command, and it went to 127.0.0.1.

Oh, dear -- I just startled the husband with my cackling. Some people simply shouldn't be allowed near a computer.

*stifled laughter* (don't want to wake the neighbors up).

*splutter*splutter* It was funny as soon as you mentioned 127.0.0.1, but when you said "format command" I lost it.

I kind of feel bad for that kid's parents -- or whoever owns the computer. Hope he/she/it gets grounded forever.

I think this should be illustrated by a cat hiding behind a little wall built out of French fries.

Bwah ha ha! (I was a unix sys admin in a former life.) And that transcript... Thanks for making my day.

That's one of my all-time favorite stories. Never gets old. Thanks for pointing me at it, even if I do now have to clean coffee of the cat.

Your cat isn't self-cleaning?

Techincally yes, however, hyping a three month cat on high test is on my list of, "Do not repeat." The last coffee-cat experience involved extracting said wee fluff from the chamber space in the ceiling.

Yes, I got that part.

I was making a reference to a t-shirt that says, "There's no place like 127.0.0.1..."

D'oh. I even thought of that shirt as I was typing this.

You know, I'm not a hacker and I know better. How is that anyone claiming computer knowledge gets taken in by that? I mean, seriously?

If this is true (call it 70 percent likely, the amount of stupid in the world seems, at times, to be without limit), my guess is he was/is a script kiddie.

No real awareness of the way the systems work, but a lot of little tricks. Sort of like having a spring-gun, but no knowledge of locks actual mechanisms.

So he never learned how networks are built. Until I had to learn some of that, I didn't know where "home" was.

On the flip side, I know people, and I wouldn't have trusted the guy to be telling me his IP. A quick Whois, or a simple command line "ping" would have told me something fishy was going on.

But hey, I know lots of people I could pull that sort of head-fake on.

I've got 9-m-o kitty who's always on hyper. I do not want him on caffeine or anything else, thank you very much. He's passing 16 lbs. and greeted me Monday night as I got home by thundering down the stairs and leaping at me from the 5th step up... (he fell short, thank ghu)
