pecuniumLast week I made a jo for Aikdo. It's the straight stick we do body training with. There are entire schools of training, outside of aikido, dedicated to it, and the basics are that of the yari (straight spear).
I went to Arroyo Hardwoods, and chose a decent piece of white oak dowel (1"), which they sell because people use it for curtain rods. Cost me 7 bucks. I cut it to length, and then sanded it (down to 240 grit) to a smooth finish. Then I oiled it.
Last night I got to use it at the dojo for the first time. It was good. Wayne took a look at it, and thought it was a good stick. Had I bought one, made to purpose and sold as a jo it would have cost about $45. I'd say my hour's worth of work was well spent.
It's name... John Anderson.
