The state of my leg
Mar. 1st, 2011 08:44 pmIs much improved. The prognoses are in minor conflict, mostly about when I ought to start walking on it. The earliest date suggested was about two weeks ago, and the lastest in about two weeks.
All of them were saying it ought to be in the walking cast.
With a lot of second guessing, I've started walking, some.
The things is that I've been taking the cast off. It doesn't seem all that needed when I am just sitting about, and it's bulky, and hard on my knee. So I've been standing on the foot, some, since the walking cast when on, which is what the doctor said to do. Sometime last week I started to use the walking cast, with the crutches. There was damn all for weight on my foot.
I've not needed to use any percocet in something like two weeks, and I think it was closer to three. I used about eight of the extra I got, so I needed them, but not in any great quantity. The important thing is that I have more than I need, which means I am not unwilling to take them if I need them.
I had a bad moment last Friday, when the kneelchair tried to spill, and I had to use my right (i.e. bum) leg to keep up. It was uncomfortable, but not all that painful. I had the impression I could tell where the break is, but I suspect that's just inflamed tissues complaining, because the swelling/bruising is still present.
My skin, from the upper-edge of the sole of my foot, to somewhere near my wasted calf, is all new. It's smooth, sort of glossy and very sensitive.
Friday, or maybe Saturday, I took my first steps. I did it when
tenacious_snail was home, just in case something went wrong. Since then I have been doing some walking, some crutch assisted walking, and some crutching. Today I used the kneelchair to get to school, because I am not willing to commit to the crutches, much less walking, for another week or so.
Yesterday I drove. That was interesting. I was able to tell that, for all there has been atrophy, the muscle tone in my leg is at about 85 percent. The mass is about 50 percent. I also lost track of my hand, and shut the car door on my fingers. I did some swearing and reached over to pull the handle and open it (never jerk when you close a door on your hand, de-gloving injuries are bad). My index finger is tender, and there is some bruising, but no new broken bones.
So... I ought to be, pretty much, back to "normal" (for values of normal which involve rebuilding muscles, balance, sense of personal integrity) in two-three weeks.
Here's hoping.
