Prior to the affronts to human dignity which took place at Abu Ghraib, the Americans who were captured by insurgents in Iraq were let go.

Afterwards, they started to be killed.

Cause and effect?

Just thinking out loud.

"Cause and effect" seems like a reasonable probability, to me. But still ... I think we're dealing with at least three distinct "enemies" in Iraq -- a few (but increasing number of) Al Qua'eda (& associated) fanatics, who seem to tend to torture & kill as a matter of principle; sectarian fanatics, who might be more interested in killing members of other sects than in killing us; and actual insurgents who mostly just want us to get out of their country, and might consider that releasing prisoners is more effective ina PR sense than killing them. (Not that these groups are necessarily mutually-exclusive.) Mind you, I know dreadfully little about the actual conditions there, and am thinking more on the basis of less-than-profound understanding of human beings and tribal cultures. (I note, with approval, that you say "captured", rather than "kidnapped" -- it seems more realistic than the government & rubber-stamp Media usage.)

Too bad the insurgents don't know about civilized standards for the treatment of prisoners.

Or are so primitive they can't be expected to learn about them.

At least Americans are evolved enough that they can be expected to know better.
