Tired

The excercise finally snatched me. The First Sergeant and the Commander had managed to hang onto me, but that meant I was the alternate. The primary was snagged to be some VIP's driver, so I got moved over.

Which means I am working nights, moving paper from one box to another. It's meaningful, but feels pointless.

I found out I was working nights, at the end of the Duty Day on Saturday. So I'd been up since 0630, and my shift runs until 0630. My sleep schedule was pretty much adjusted, and now it isn't. I was allowed to come in a little late, so I got about two hours of sleep.

When I got off duty I slept for four hours, was up for six-seven, and slept; fitfully, for another two. I have five hours left in this shift, and I'm a little punchy. The mess hall was supposed to be serving mid-rats, but isn't.

In the morning I'll go and get my typhoid vaccination, and the first of my HepB. I need those for Ukraine. I hate the typhoid shot, it hurts.

I found an Aikido Dojo, down in Daegu, but, alas, I have no time, and no transportation (with working the night shift I could, actually, probably manage the time, but I am not at liberty). If I'd found it two weeks ago (I saw it when we were running some errands, I just looked up, and there it was).

When I get back, I'll be going to Tenn. to visit my father, and my little sisters. I'll be bringing back the Sinar 4x5 camera he isn't using anymore. That will let me do some serious macro work. I'll have to pull out the books and actually work the numbers though.

The 35mm/digital cameras all have built in light meters, so the fall-off as the lens moves further away from the film plane is factored in. With the 4x5 I have to figure all of that out by heand (for those who don't know, that's the size of the negative. What that allows is greater size in the print, with smaller factor of magnification. A 4x6 image from a 35mm negative is a 16x magnification. That same factor, with a 4x5 negative, would generate a 16x24 inch print. That means an 8x10 is only blown up four times, which allows for a magnificent sharpness).

It also has complete control of the plane of focus. Boing-boing had some interesting articles on how to fake some of the effects with photoshop, tricks of making it seem one has selective focus. The only drawback is the developing. B&W is no biggie, but I'll need to get some equipment to do slide film. I think my dad has a Gobo which I can get, so that may not be so much hassle as all that.

So there may be some pictures to scan.

When I get it, I'll start using it. When I get the hang of it, I scan things. When I scan them, I'll post them.

I know where Knoxville is. I mentioned Oak Ridge, instead of Knoxville, because you know the area, and I didn't want you to think I was closer/further than I am. I'll been in town for about 10 days (Good Friday to the Sunday after Easter).

I'll see what the schedule looks like, but I am pretty sure we can get together. Lunch, dinner, drinks? What's your pleasure?

I'm off work on Good Friday Spring Holiday, and both weekends.

I don't drink alcohol but have no objection to bars if I can get soda or coffee. I'm mostly omnivorous and like all varieties of food. Drinks or dinner any evening but Monday, or lunch on a weekend would be fine with me.
