And of course they are lying about it too
Jul. 20th, 2011 08:31 amOne of the things I forgot to include in the piece about the "Cut, Cap, and Balance" bill the Republicans are baying about is that they are presenting it as something it's not.
When they passed it out of committee they sent out a copy of a speech Reagan (that sainted patriarch who seems to represent all that is good to Republicans) made in support of a very different balanced budget amendment. Never mind that the two bills are radically different in origin, and scope.
Among it's other ills this one would roll back the size of the government to that 1966, and freeze it there. Changes since then, swept aside. Are there aspects of the government I'd like to see greatly reduced? Yes. Things like the DEA, and the vast expense of the, "War on Drugs". I'd like to see the TSA dismantled, and the consolidation of Immigration, Customs and the Border Patrol undone. I'd like to see all manner of waste ferreted out.
But somehow I don't think this is going to be effective at that. Things like IRS enforcement of the tax code aren't likely to be high priorities, and things which "make us safer" will be sacred cows. So it will be the "unsustainable" things like Medicare, Social Security, and the rest of our social safety net which are cut loose. Infrastructure? Privatise it is my guess.
Not the way to run a country, as Malawi found out.
