Mount St. Helens let off a little steam today.

And I want some ash... not much, say 15-25 lbs.

I want it for glazing pots.

So, if anyone is able to get me some, in the next few weeks, before it gets contaminated, I will be more than happy to pay the postage, and some small (or not so small) object of gratitude the other way.

It will probably be ceramic, but maybe not.

Good luck. I hear the ash fall was very light... a dusting that would require you to wash your car.

You'd have to get near the crater to get that much dust, I'd suspect... and that's not a very good place to be right now.

Terry, I don't think you're going to get some unless you know someone who was on the mountain - which is actually a far distance from any of the observation decks/buildings. Have you been to Mt. St. Helen's on one of your Seattle trips, btw? It's freakin' awesome to visit. I went many times and enjoyed it.

We would do it for you (awesome excuse to take the motorcycle up some twisty roads), but they're not really letting anyone near it. Looks like she might blow again. And [livejournal.com profile] insomnia is right, it was a very light ash cloud, mostly just steam.

If there's a more sincere eruption in the next few weeks, I'm sure your wish will be granted. I was in Connecticut when the mountain blew in 1980. I arrived back in Seattle via Greyhound less than a week after the eruption. As we went across eastern Washington, I kept looking out the window and thinking (in that pre-thought way, ya know?), Snow! Dead snow? Oh: ash.

I've never seen a landscape look so wrong before or since.

I have a black glass vase made from that ash.

We'll keep it in mind. As Kate says, if she does something spectacular, I bet we can manage ash with little or no trouble. If something more intermediate occurs, perhaps we can take a side trip on the way to Orycon next month. Basically, much depends on how events develop...
