I'm on the road again,

On the road again -
Just can't wait to get on the road again.
The life I love is making music with my friends

And I can't wait to get on the road again.
On the road again

Goin' places that I've never been.
Seein' things that I may never see again

Depending on how one defines "music" this is the core of it. I saw a pair of sunsets that I wasn't able to stop and shoot, so they are alive only so long as I recall them, one over a small piece of Lake Huron, in Canada, and one over a pond in Wisconsin; the second is the one I regret most, I'd changed the load out of the bike so I could stop and grab photos, but there was no place to safely stop.

The new luggage is good, but seductive. Marna and I rode, by way of Raven's Knoll, to Callendar, Ont. Because we didn't need to take all my gear (in fact we couldn't), we put just what we needed into the top case.

A mistake. Adding the weight of the luggage, to her weight; and all of it high on the bike made for a less stable ride. Not such a big deal when moving, but mounts/dismounts were work, and there were two tip-overs. One was a dismount, and I stopped it (mostly because I was jammed against the gas-pump) The other was at a light. I had my feet down and something shifted... the next thing I new she was past the tipping point and I set her on the ground (I was stable enough to keep from dropping her, but there was no way, with the luggage, and Marna, pulling to the ground that I could keep her up).

No harm done (save to my pride), and we made our way to the campground, where we sat up with the fire (for those who don't know... the bark of white birch will make a furious flame, with a decent staying power.. enough to get the dampest of unprotected wood into a blaze), the cider ("Pom D'or) and a thermos of coffee with bourbon, until about 3 in the morning.

Woke about eleven, and made the rest of the way to Callendar. Spent the night, had a lazy morning with Ian, Cat, Rayne, and Ian's family, went to North Bay with Ian, Marna, and Rayne before I left... which is how I left my GPS in the trunk of their car, which cost me about 2 hours, and Cat Rayne and Marna about the same.

There was still time to make it to Iron Bridge, if not the border, so off I went; after a second set of goodbyes.

The road was nice. having talked to lots of people, I was less worried about the speeds I was doing (they were fine for the road, at times almost perfect; the blend of balance and power which makes the road, the bike, and the body seem almost seamless), and I got to Iron Bridge a bit after sunset, took a room, dropped my gear and grabbed some supper.

Which was wonderful. Pork Loin with apples three ways (Roasted slices, pickled, and as a purree). The pig lived a good life. Pork is often dull... merely a vehicle for sauce ("the other white meat"" not this. It was nutty, with the barest hint of being gamey. The carrots were baby, and steamed with bit of the tops left on... just enough to hold as one ate them. The potatoes, were mashed, coarsely, so one could tell they were fluffy, not waxy. A glass of Inniskilling pinot grigio/reisling (which was not stellar, but at least as good as many a local house wine in San Fransisco, so I had nothing to complain about), and off to bed; though I spent about 20 minutes chewing the fat with some locals; talking about travel and speeding tickets, and hearing tales of the local not-quite legitimate sorts).

Up in the morning, a shower, load the bike, and check out. Decided the breakfast elsewhere wasn't likely to be better (based on last night) and wasn't disappointed in the least. French bread, made into french toast (with local maple syrup) and some peameal, because I figured, based on the pork loin the night before, it would be good. I was right.

On the road. Two lanes, with hayfields to either side, when the trees weren't hugging the road. Saw a couple of hawks, a couple of Mennonites in a trap, and the usual run of rural.

For lack of time, I'll pick this up later, but here's what the day looked like, sort of.

On the Road

I've had exactly the same weight/balance problem on my bicycle, if I bungee too much to the top of the rear rack. Definitely a pain.

The pork loin made me salivate. Sounds like it's worth a detour.

Good luck on the rest of your trip.
