Russia has just published a paper blaming Poland for starting WW2.

Russia accuses Poland of starting Second World War

Now, quite apart from it being an inane position, it seems to be more of a sop to the throwback sense of insecurity in the days of Stalin's Soviet Union.

"Anyone who has been minded to study the history of the Second World War knows it started because of Poland's refusal to meet Germany's requests," the statement read. "The German demands were very modest. You could hardly call them unfounded."

Appearing to take Germany's demands at face value, the defence ministry insisted that the Nazis were interested only in building transport links across the Polish Corridor to East Prussia and assuming control of Gdansk, which had been designated as a free city at the time.

Riiiigght. And once it's in, well the deed is done, so you might as well lie back and enjoy it, as Czechoslovakia and Austria did.

Or something. Toss in some false equivalency between the Molotov Ribbentrop treaty and Chamberlain at Munich... which fails to note that Molotov/Ribbentrop was after the invasion of the Sudetenland and the Austrian Anschluss. The close proximity in the signing (August 23rd) and the invasion of Poland; by both Germany and Russia, in less than two weeks, implies there might have been something different about the two agreements.

Not only did the falsity of Hitler not have so much of a visible track record, Neither Britain, nor France (who also caved in, in respect to the Sudetenland) made any profit from the arrangement. The same cannot be said of the Soviet Union.

So... why you may ask does this nonsense add to the reasons I feel the need for a diplomatic passport to travel to Russia?

Under planned legislation, backed by Mr Medvedev[president of Russia], any Russian or foreigner who claims that the Soviet Union occupied Poland or the Baltic States could face up to five years in prison.

That's why.
