About that project

It has come to my attention that actually voting for My Dream Photo Assignment is a bit of a trial.

The problem, so it seems is figuring out how to register, and then refinding the project for which one want's to vote. Since I wasn't trying to vote on something, but rather write one, this wasn't plain to me.

The easiest way to negotiate the process seems to be:

1: Go to the link above. After the page loads, copy the URL from the address bar.

2: Click on the button which says, "Submit your idea now"

3: Fill out the registration form (the ticky box about wanting e-mail is optional; if you aren't planning to submit a proposal, feel free to fake the phone number).

4: Follow the link in the registration e-mail.

5: Load the copied url into the address bar.

6: Vote (a button marked, "Pic").

I hope I'm not nagging you all with this. I confess I can't get it out of my head. Another hundred votes, and I'm in the running. Another 200 votes and I make the top ten, which makes me more visible, and more likely to stay in contention.

I'm begging a little here but if you can spare a little time, I'd be grateful. I can't really offer anything but pictures, and writing, but if I get this, you will get that.

It didn't even ask me for a phone number (I've found that online forms are generally happy to take 212-555-1212, though), and I have endless disposable email addresses.

Given that they're investigating and validating the top twenty for a whole bunch of criteria, and that he's got a decent chance of getting in to the top twenty anyways, I can only suggest this would probably be a poor idea.

Not that I thought it through myself, or anything.

I'm not ballot-stuffing, I'm just making sure I don't get on their mailing list. (They will get at most two votes from this domain, because there are two people who get our email from it: but since I own the domain, mail to any address at the domain not otherwise defined is mine. If, six months from now, they try spamming the address I signed up with, it'll go into the bit bucket without further effort.)

I think I managed to figure it out ('twern't easy) and vote, a couple of days ago, but got crashed-out when trying to leave a Comment.

The part of your proposal that caught my fancy most was "barge" -- the Canal Boat Microcosm is fascinating, and I was delighted by the tiny (a couple of hours) bit of it I was able to experience. There are many books describing and picturing it (some even listing and describing Pubs & Restaurants along particular canal networks), apparently several Canal Boat blogs, a few WebCams set up at locks, and I suspect other fascinating InterNet coverage as well. Thanks (I guess) for providing me with yet another Infinite Time-Sink.

I think that what stymied me is that it is a picture contest, and 1) I was looking for the word "vote" and didn't see it, and 2) I thought that Pic was slang for picture...

OK, I voted - but I have misgivings about the ethical aspect of joining a community especially to vote, without even wanting to be part of said community.

On the other hand, I *really* like the idea of you getting a dream assignment... ...so, my vote is added, too.

FWIW, I don't think they have a community, as such, nor plan to have one. The registration is mostly to avoid ballot-box stuffing.

I think it's not about comminity (barring comments, of 300 characters starting conversation; which might be a good way to show active interest... hermn) I think it's to make sure no one votes 60,000 times for their own project.

I use Firefox. I started from your assignment page and it took me right back there once I was registered, so it was really easy for me. Maybe the site works better with Firefox?

I've loved so many of your photos, and enjoyed your comments so much on Making Light that I dutifully tried to vote for you. Maybe the problem is that I'm perpetually worried about security on the Web, but I lied about my name, rank and serial number, but gave a valid e-mail address. The problem is that I never received the e-mail to confirm my ability to vote for you. I tried re-registering to no avail. I tried getting them to re-send the confirmatory e-mail. Nothing. It's not in my junk mail.

I really want you to win this contest. I want great art to be rewarded. I would buy your prints if I had the money to spare -- and I want the world to have a better chance to enjoy your view of the world.

Is there something I've missed in the registration process?

I don't know. They've recently changed the interface. I'd try again, with a different e-mail account, from a different machine. So long as you only vote once, it ought not matter what name you use.
