Up front, I don't like McCain. It's a function of lots of things, most of them having to do with his bullshit claims to be against torture while making it no longer against the law.

Some of it has to do with his voting against Jim Webb's GI Bill because it would provide "too much incentive" for mid-level NCOs to leave the service.

But he's down in Georgia campaigning for Saxby Chambliss, who got into office by running a Rovian campaign calling Max Cleland a terrorist-supporting, America-hating, unpatriotic piece of vermin; never mind that he'd served in Vietnam and lost not one, but THREE limbs, while Chambliss had a "trick knee" which got him rated 4F.

When that was happening McCain said it was reprehensible.

Six years later, not so much.

So all that stuff about, "the real McCain" surfacing in his concession speech. All crap. The Real McCain was seen in the his bid for the presidency (which started at least four years ago; when he courted Kerry for the VP slot, and then used that to hang him out to dry while he kissed Bush, and made sure a lot of the swing voters who still had respect for him went for Bush), a coniving, back-stabbing, rat-fucking, bastard who would sell his very soul to win. Even now, when he's already lost, he's still selling it (with not so much as Wales on the table in exchange).

So what vague chance of rehabilitating himself he might have had... down the drain.

I'm going to link to this. However, it could use some HTML fixing.

Thanks. Up too early, and too long on the train. I forgot to preview.

Fixed.

He's really become a twisted, disturbing, disturbed, unrecognizable specter of his former self.

Yeah, he's amassed a great record of standing up for his fellow vets. Except, y'know, not.

I really hope Chambliss loses.

He has no former self. McCain has been a right-wing ratbag all along, and used an occasional charm of manner and a few off-the-reservation views to try to disguise himself. But beware!

I am so glad whenever I hear anyone say this. He did such a good job of convincing people he was a rational Republican for so long, and just about everyone seems to be still hanging onto that belief despite unbelievable scads of evidence to the contrary.

As near as I can figure his only claim to fame was being held a POW for several years - I gather his service record wasn't the best before that - and knowing he had an affair w/ a former employer of mine while he was married - and I have never seen him as anything but a Repulsican - the true McCain has always been there for us all to see - but apparently this country so loves to rehab the loser - (remember Nixon's reincarnation as elder statesman?)pfft!

Forgive me if this is old news to you, but did you know there's actually a website called www.fuckjohnmccain.com? It's a quite vituperative, but also well-researched and thoroughly supported indictment of Mccain going all the way back in his political career.

Why are you holding back?

"This soldier says it as well as I've heard from anyone
why I'd have voted for any thing before the asshole."

The bit I added to the link sent to some friends.
A couple who tried to make me think this asshole
was worth shit, much less worth voting for.

As ex Navy, it pisses me off that he's worked to cover up
the fuck-up that he was, & the easy treatment he got 'cause
he had a 4 star daddy to grease his way.

Don't be so reticent. Tell us how you really feel!

Mind you, I'm as pissed about the Chambliss support as you are. Max Clelland is pretty damn close to being the All-American Hero in my book, and what Chambliss did to him is reprehensible, and what Shrub did to him when Clelland tried to get to see him is even worse!

The most remarkable thing for me about John McCain is just how quickly my vaguely positive image of McCain (mostly consisting of remembering my mom say she'd rather have had McCain vs. Bradley in 2000) turned sour when I actually read about the guy.

That said, I had my suspicions in September '01, the day of, when his immediate reaction was 'hit them back'. But the issue didn't come up for me until much later.

If I did tht, I'd have to put it behind a cut, and post a warning notice.

To be honest, I am not sure about wanting to meet the man, because I have a few things I like to say to him, and it would lead to his being really offended.

Well done. I'm sick of the pussy-footing around these jackals. There seems to be an aversion among "respectable" liberals to calling it as it is. I vote for a rehabilitation of the term "whitewashed tombs" to apply to the GOP.

I didn't really believe the "new" McCain on election night, mostly because of all the crap he had been slinging, and letting his people and supporters sling, at Obama mere days and hours beforehand. "I'll wait and see what he's like when he's back in the senate," I said to myself. "Until then I get to keep being pissed off."

Welp. I guess this saves me some time and energy, here. Although now I have to figure out what to do with someone who isn't repentant--it's a different sort of thing than working through how to forgive someone who is.

Funny how the name McCain used to mean something good, to me.
