John Hinderacker (whom Time, when they were discovering blogs, named as the keeper of the blog of the year), says something like this; straight-faced.

Obama thinks he is a good talker, but he is often undisciplined when he speaks. He needs to understand that as President, his words will be scrutinized and will have impact whether he intends it or not. In this regard, President Bush is an excellent model; Obama should take a lesson from his example. Bush never gets sloppy when he is speaking publicly. He chooses his words with care and precision, which is why his style sometimes seems halting. In the eight years he has been President, it is remarkable how few gaffes or verbal blunders he has committed. If Obama doesn't raise his standards, he will exceed Bush's total before he is inaugurated.

As he might say,

Heh.

No, he doesn't really believe that. I don't think he's been watching.

Oh, it's always entertaining when missives like this one make their way across the dimensional 'brane separating us from Bizarro Universe.

Olbermann just covered the Hinderacker quote to hilarious effect on Countdown as I typed this. Synchronicity?

I like this the best of all the proposed explanations.

No. He didn't say that! He didn't! He couldn't!

Please tell me he didn't really say that Bush never gets sloppy when he is speaking publicly.

I should have linked, but even with rel=nofollow I dislike giving him, and his ilk, traffic.

He did say it, he did mean it, and he does want Obama to take it to heart.

Heaven help us all.

I read the quote before the header and thought it was a hilarious bit of tongue-in-cheek. Then I read the intro. And at that point there's really...not much to say on that one.

When someone stabs your baby in front of you and yells at YOU to stop stabbing your baby, there will be a portion of the general public that will assume the words are correct...

They bank on that.
Until and unless we repeat his blunders forevermore, the small but loud repetitious band of right wing supporters will elevate Curious George to status reserved only for Jesus.

Wow.

Umm... what does that imply about what he would have been like if he had been "sloppy," if he *hadn't* been choosing his words "with care and precision?"

My brain hurts. I think I need to go find some zombie mob to eat it, because then I'll be able to go after a new one.

One that isn't trying to imagine the inarticulate babbling version of GWB.

Ow.

Just one example: David Letterman's recurring segment "Great Moments in Presidential Speeches."

Yes, so few verbal gaffes or blunders that there is a website apparently devoted to recording them:
http://www.slate.com/id/76886/
not to mention a new word to describe them:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bushism

Lots of supporting merchandise, such as a calendar with Bushisms for every day:
http://www.amazon.com/GEORGE-BUSHISMS-2008-DTD-CALENDAR/dp/0740766546

And at least 5 books collecting his Bushisms, although looking at Amazon it seems the word might have been coined for his dads missayings.

So yeah, of course Obama has problems with public speaking, and Bush uses perfect english.

I rather like the explanation on Fark, that Hinderaker had been in a cave on Mars for the past eight years.

Of course, the idea that Bush might commit gaffes and errors, or be anything other than the most eloquent and thoughtful of speakers could only occur to members of the 'reality-based community'. People like Hinderaker exist in an entirely distinct continuum, best described as Unreality.

I love the GOP. My icon is my joy to them. they are perfect. God will come down and only take those that vote for George 7 or 8 times each election. Those that say bad things or mention any of that non-reality stuff just don't understand- they are perfect. We just haven't gone FAR enough. They think we haven't gone far enough to let the economy show us how Star wars would have worked, trickle down economics would have eventually worked, and how GOP deconstruction of every single program in the New Deal (a TERRIBLE THING!) will be the best for all of us.
i also believe that Jim Jones did a very good GOP thing in Ghana when he served drinks for everyone.
i am also sure that Columbine was great for lowering student teacher ratios in Colorado, that gas prices over $4.00 a gallon are going to make us all appreciate Chevron more and love Shell, and that Dick Cheney would make a WONDERFUL Santa Claus.
Meanwhile, the nuts are buying guns cause they think our President is going to become Sauron or something.
FOX news needs an enema. The entire right has so much fear mongering and insanity.... i want to have mandatory mental health checks. Bet we end up with the entire GOP party in lockdown.

(congratulations.... i have gone insane and run off topic!).
