A "commemerative" silver leaf "coin striking" of a 20 dollar bill is being marketed.

It's appealing to the idea of, "we will never forget" about That Tues. With the numbers for the value being added up from 9, and 11.

The reverse is the part one is supposed to look at, with the towers of the World Trade Center frosted on a smooth background, "Glowing as they did on that fateful morning"

Seven years, that's what it's meant to recall. Why seven years is supposed to be so important, I have no idea, but they are pushing it.

Now, I happen find this sort of wound-poking, pain-retaining, exceptionalist crap, really offensive. To be honest, it disgusts me.

They say it was going to be sold at an intial offering price of $39 US, but now it can be had for the face value of $20.

But there's a catch. It not legal tender in the US, it's legal tender in Liberia. Can I send them $20 Liberian (which is, $.32 US as I type this). Because they say it's being offered at the "face value" and as I understand it and made a point to show Whole Foods the other day) if you have an advertised price, you have to sell at that price.

I'd love to make them take a bath on this piece of shit.

They never say what it is that we'll never forget. That there are furriners who hate us for our freedoms? Or that the bastard who did this to us was trained by our government? Or that the said bastard could have been stopped, but the morons in charge weren't interested in paying attention until they realized that this fear is a great tool for keeping the People in line?

It was a gift from [profile] ourika. I use it when feeling a trifle subversive/prankster-ish.

Ah this happened right after 9/11. And it was done this way with stamps. And other occasions. Small countries minting coins, bills, and stamps, marketed to Americans. What's 9/11 to them but another reason to make money? Just like the vendors around Ground Zero. Or the politicians looking for money for pet projects.

This is just pain inducing crap

Along with the coin the other year that 'the twin towers rise again". The best of this ilk was a coin 'commemorating' some anniversary of the Corvette, and the headlights lit up somehow.

Piece of trash to make money off of idiots. Not much more.

I saw the ad for that horrific piece of dreck a few days ago, and had to be stopped from wanting to hurl something heavy at the TV. The TV itself is guiltless, and besides, I don't want to buy a new one.

David and I saw that add earlier this week and discussed how morally wrong it is. It disgusts me!!

Others have said this much more eloquently than I can. I'm still steaming about it.

To be fair, Liberia is looking at any way it can to pump its economy up after years of civil war. Its economy is a total mess, and its government is trying to rebuild pulling together what resources it can find. Yes, it is tacky, but it is an attempt by a half-way decent government to provide something for a people who have been shafted for the past twenty years.

I am not mad at Liberia. I don't think Liberia is making much money from this. The "mint" paid a flat fee, and Liberia isn't really at risk of losing money becaue no one is going cash in the certificate for 32 cents worth of silver.

Yes. I've been tryiug to figure out how to write this up for about two weeks. It was figuring out the "advertised price" aspect that made it doable.
