Padlock, Upland Santa Cruz, originally uploaded by pecunium.

We were walking back from a trip up to the lava tubes in the highlands of Santa Cruz. We took a cab up, and walked back.

It's an exercise in how the camera can lie. What does the entire gate look like? What's the gate protecting? Ignoring the, apparent, condition of the wood (which is at a moderate premium on the islands) how secure is the area behind the gate?

The answers are: the gate is low (not quite four feet, as I recall), what's behind it is a yard, with some children's toys. Just down the way was an entrance to the yard, with no gate.

But it's still a nice photograph. I particularly like the way the wear from the chain is apparent

I like the photo and the tidbits I can learn from your blog about photography (Fang gave me a digital camera for my birthday, time to join the present century). However, words are my first love. I think you meant to say that the entrance just down the way had no gate, I could be wrong. Whether it was your intention or not you wrote "with no hate." I found it a somewhat poetic interchanging of words. So all of that together, the image, the description of what isn't in the image and the thought of gate and hate as being able to replace each other in prose has made me smile. Thank you.

Oops. That last bit was a late addition, and the keys are too close together.

Corrected. I'm glad my photographic posts are useful. Which camera did he get you?

It's a Nikon Coolpix 8700. It doesn't use detachable lenses or any of the other archaic Nikon gear that I have for my Fseries, but it has instant gratification and a lens cap on a tether. I lose lens caps as easily as glancing in the direction of my camera bag; its pitiful. The digital is Fang's old camera; I love being in line for his hand-me-downs. Hopefully I'll have it figured out before we leave the zoo tomorrow. Kelly's in town from France with the hubby and kids and the non-English speaking in-laws. It should make for an interesting field trip, and hopefully for some nice pics.
