Valentine's Day

First thing, unless you have a restaurant where you are known, don't bother going out.

Maia and I were lucky, in that her class this evening was cancelled on account of bronchitis.

So we met at the Mission St. Farmers' Market. She bought herself an artichoke, I got some baby asparagus tips.

Got home (after looking at the new Whole Foods in Pasadena (on Arroyo Parkway. It's like an amusement park. Wine and Tapas bar, great samples and an escalator for your cart).

Home again and time in the kitchen. She wants welsh rabbit to go with her Asparagus and Gewurtz.

I'm taking some black forest bacon, sautéed onions and the aspragus to make a small quiche.

Start the bacon (one strip), render some of the fat and add the onions. When they are done, turn off the fire. Meanwhile mix an egg, some cream and some milk; with a dash of cumin and black pepper. I aim for about 8-12 percent fat. Thinner than half and half, but thicker than milk.

Blind bake some pie crust in a number five cast iron skillet. After about 25 minutes, it will be done, remove the beans and let it cool.

While that's baking, blanch the asparagus (cut small) and let mix with the bacon (crumbled) and onions. When the crust is cooled, put the vegetables in the crust, pour the ggnog over them, pop into a 350F oven for 25-30 minutes and lo!, one has a quiche.

That cart escalator doesn't get any less ridiculous the more I see it. (Which isn't often since I still like the other WholeFoods better.) But at least with that WholeFoods I can walk in off the street without going through a parking lot, just have to get past all the roasted nut sellers and all the people stopping to gawk at the place.

I prefer Trader Joe's, but it's a trek into midtown.

I love cart escalators! You don't have to wait in line for an elevator that way. (This comment applies to an IKEA store cart escalator, not the one in your local Whole Foods.)
