Ignore that he stopped to look into SF Fandom after he mocked it on SNL.

Forget that he manages to poke fun at himself in the Priceline adds.

Just look at this.

Having been stranded at Walter Reed, when I had no one in the area whom I could look to for outside succor, and been fortunate to be there before the strain on the system began to really show; I'm willing to let him be an obnoxious ass for the rest of his days.

I may not invite him to dinner if he does, but I'll still stand him a drink at the bar.

Is this legit? Or is this another black-hole for donations where a few promoters skim 90% off charitable donations into their own pockets? Pardon me if I sound pessimistic but I've been burned so many times in the past that I am hesitant to bite on promos like this one.

Well, Shatner specifically gives the address (correctly) of the Soldier Family Assistance center at Walter Reed as the location for donations. http://sfac.wramc.amedd.army.mil/default.aspx
So, mismanagement of SFAC at Walter Reed is a different issue (which I have no basis to comment on) but it certainly appears the request is going to a legitimate source.

Having sent phone cards and similar items to both Water Reed and Bethesda Naval Hospital (where the Marines go), I can say they both have social services departments that handle these things and are very committed to doing the best they can for the troops there. According to chaplains I have spoken to, gift cards are good, because it allows for some choice depending on sizes, what's needed, and so on. When I did phone cards, I sent several for $20, rather than one large one, so they could be passed to the maximum number of people. Both Walter Reed's and Bethesda's social services people can tell you what they particularly need at a given time, if you contact them--they both have websites where you can get the phone number or e-mail address needed.
