I expected it, but it doesn't make it easier.

Steve Gilliard is dead.

Never met him. Spent time at his blog (now defunct, just as Jen said it would be).

Shakespeare said the evil men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones. Not this time. A lot of the good Steve did was to foster, in some freewheeling comment threads) a lively discourse. A brash sense of place; call it a seventeenth century coffee-house sort of thing.

Even if you disagreed with him, his passion, his unwillingness to let what he thought was shit get sold as Shinola continues, because there are some good bloggers who came out of that (and the four months since he took ill, saw many of them come to flower, as they kept his seat warm for him, in the hopes he would come back).

I never met him, I am poorer for his passing, and the exchanges we had, they are bits of precious memory.

Ave atque vale.
