Stateside evidence
Sep. 14th, 2004 02:24 pmThe problems at Abu Grhaib, GTMO, Bagram, et alia, are a bugbear of mine... I've said that part of the problem is systemic, and the system I point to is the US's ideas, and methods of treating it's prison population (recall that Graner was a prison guard).
Which is why this Wampum is presented. I expect you to be appalled, but it speaks to the problems we, as a society, are creating. When one thinks about how many people we incarcerate, and how we brutalise them, perhaps it's not a shock when they come out as less pleasant then they were when they went in.
When we have an administration which argues torture isn't torture if the victim has all his limbs and organs when the session is over, and then we let prison guards take care of them, well perhaps it's not such a surprise they get abused.
The problems must be eradicated at the root, pruning he branches, because the fruit has ripened as expected is fraud.
