I like computers. I like the internet. I happen to think the remote ability to update software is a swell thing. inexpensive, fast and usually a good idea.
But what I don't like is people doing me favors I don't want.
In particular right now I'm irked at Earthlink.
The latest update has a news-ticker. Feh. I want to watch headlines I'll go to Times Square, or watch CNN. It also decided I needed to be told, audibly, there is mail in the account (which is never used... I emptied it today, a couple of hundred messages from earthlink telling me about the spam they blocked {which seems to be working, as there was no spam in the account, unless one counts all the mail from earthlink}) and alerts from earthlink telling me how swell they are.
Those are annoying enough... but a bit of digging and that is fixed. What I didn't like, not at all, was them deciding what my homepage should be. After I fixed that (which isn't in the normal place, because, somehow, earthlink has the controls for that in the Earthlink taskbar, which I never use, since all it does is give me access to things I don't use, or duplicate the browser's toolbar), I found out the e-mail squawk doesn't care that I'm opening on another page, it want's me to know (every time I open a new browser window from the taskbar/shortcut) I have new mail.
When I fix that I discover that somehow, the act of fixing it reset my homepage again.
So I had to remember where they buried the tool to reset it, again.
Feh... bloody piracy.
