I really was thinking of effigies today

Guy Fawkes is dead, and rightly so, but it seems now there is a kernal of merit to his aims.

We don't bother with burning people in effigy for 400 years because they want to blow up Parliament - we do it because they failed to blow up Parliament (hence the firework displays - a small demonstration of what should have happened) :D

Its always a good idea to violently overthrow an elected government (however imperfect) and replace it with an unelected one out of sympathy with the wishes of the majority.

One of my good friend's birthdays is today - instead of a cake, we burn him in effigy. Sometimes we roast marshmallows.
