Eric Muller (Is that legal?) links to a post at The Volokh Conspiracy on McCarthy.

He pointed to it because the comments have a back and forth about the methodology of history.

I found it interesting because the process of history interests me (I've seen how things "are" change in my lifetime. For a good book on a piece of history which will probably be different for our children, when compared to how it was for us, try, "The Lost World" by Tom Koppel).

I also found it topical to local history. At the centennial of the Orange Grove Meeting there was a set up of historical materials. I got to correct a piece of it (one of the photos, silkscreened on to the quilt being made had the wrong date. I know it was the wrong date because it happened to be taken on the occaision of my first visit to the Meeting House, which was recorded in the guest book; but I digress).

In it was reference to a Supreme Court case to which the Meeting had filed an Amicus Brief. The Meeting, you see, along with a number of other organisations, had been stripped of its tax-exempt status. They refused to swear an oath that they weren't interested in the violent overthrow of the US Gov't.

Tracing the threads of the meeting I kept bumping into the name of Bob Vogel. Not a huge surprise, he was a "weighty Quaker" to quote Maia. I didn't see him that way, when I knew him. He was just my girlfriend's grandfather. Freindly, personalble, and charming.

In the last annual letter of one of the members, his daughter's birth was recorded. In another spot his obituary. In between were the strands of a life.

And in that life he stood against the dark cloud that McCarthy, and his fellow-travellers spread.

Go and look at the arguments still going on about the tactics of Tail-gunner Joe.
