From Bill O'Reilly we get the following.

[W]ould you support President John Edwards? Remember, no coerced interrogation, civilian lawyers in courts for captured overseas terrorists, no branding the Iranian guards terrorists, and no phone surveillance without a specific warrant.

To which the the only answer I can think of is,

Hell yes.

Yeah, how oculd anyone present those as negatives?

And he said all that as if it were a bad thing? Good grief I'm more convinced everyday that I'm really in an alternate universe, or grew up in one and slipped into the current one by some dire mistake.

Crazy(and getting sick to the back teeth with the "quality" of public "debate", with jokers like that)Soph

If we don't live in fear, how will will ever pay attention to Mr. O'Reilly.

Well, DUH. Rule of law over rule by terror? Who in their right mind wouldn't want that? But O'Reilly is too dumb to get it.

I'd not vote for Edwards solely because he supports those things, but supporting all of them would certainly be a requirement for anyone I would vote for.

But yes, if O'Rielly asked me that on his show, I'd... probably dither between responding with "Hell, yes!" and "Of course." (Possibly adding "As a patriotic American I'd _have_ to if none of the other candidates supported those traditional American rights".)

To which I might add: "The question, Bill, is why YOU would have a problem with the Rule of Law."

Being a slow thinker, I'd hesitate to give him an opening for some Clever & Sly Retort, and probably would restrict myself to agreeing with the Founding Fathers ideal that these basic and inalienable rights apply to everyone. No matter what people are accused of, no matter who accuses them, no matter what their nationality, if they're held by an arm of the American Government they _have_ those Rights. Period.

How have we come so far? How, I wonder, have we come to this? Why on earth is it assumed that we would...

I'm only stunned.

That's sad. Terribly, terribly sad.

I'm less disgusted by Bill O than I am by the large number of people who he's playing that role for. The ones who want torture, disappearing of people without warrants, warrantless wiretapping, and warmongering with Iran.

Too many Americans are disconnected from the world enough to think these are good things.

Rules are only for other people, y'know. We get a mandate from Jesus to do whatever Bush wants.

I believe I was a bit more forceful in my expletive when I read that, but you have my sentiments exactly.

I'd spit if I could.

For fuck's sake, I'd support the rotting corpse of Saddam Hussein if I thought he'd get us back to something vaguely resembling the America I used to be able to complain about. Zombie Hussein for President!
