So I was thinking on the Omniture question, and wondering how much people care.

I also wonder how many people have Omniture cookies. 6A says they will be setting them on 5 percent (1 in 20). But more than that percentage of the people I've seen check there cache, have cookies from Omniture(which doesn't mean those are 6A/Lj cookies.

Not in that order, precisely, but yes all of the above.

I didn't also block, for instance, statcounter.com which seems to also set cookies. Same reason as my not minding the idea of LJ using 2o7 on the pages that aren't user-content - when I'm directly interacting with a person's stuff, that's ok by me for them to track and record, even using a 3rd party if they really want. 3rd party is a tiny bit iffy, but when it's not some large segment of content like 1/20th of Livejournal, it's not such a big deal to me.

I'd like to block the 2o7 cookies, but I couldn't figure out how to block them specifically without blocking the cookies that I do need. (I'll have to dig around a bit more.)

I didn't even know there were all those other options available (am a bit of a computer dunce). Is opting out via the Admin Panel sufficient, or should I do other stuff too?

It depends on your browser.

In Firefox you can go to the options panel and exclude cookies from specific sites.

I don't know about IE, I only use it for those things which won't open in Firefox.

Opting out at the Admin panel only takes care of LJ. You could run into Optimune through other websites doing the same thing.

I feel rather weird about this whole stat thing. On one hand, I can't fault a person/organazation/business for wanting to gather data that they can use to improve site traffic, usability, etc. On the other hand, I'm not so keen on having my own browsing habits profiled.

Well, I tried to block the 2o7 cookies. I'm sure I'll be able to tell within a few days if it worked. Fortunately, cookie-checking and cookie-blocking are some of the things I know how to do.

I counted them as I cleared the darn things, and I had 48 of them. All were "send for any kind of connection" cookies. No wonder my computer is working constantly whenever I'm online. And given that several of them were set this week (assuming that the 'persist until' date is some number of whole years after they were set), one of my three LJs was in the 5%.

Heh. I'm a Safari user. :-) I do use FireFox on occasion for those sites that don't play well with Safari.

Check the cookies, 2o7.net was already blocked by Spyware Doctor.

No I haven't as I don't pay for my account and a business has a reasonable expectation to make money off my patronage.

If I had, or do, pay for this sucker, they will get blocked.

I set firefox to delete cookies every time it restarts. For a while, I was looking at every cookie, but they're quite pervasive and it's hard to tell if a site is broken because you blocked a certain cookie or due to a problem with the site itself. (It's not hard to argue that if a site doesn't display content and *also* doesn't tell you it's because you didn't allow it to set a certain cookie, then the problem is with the site and not your handling of its' cookies.)

I wonder if there exists an Adblock-like plugin which will automatically update a list of domains from which cookies can safely be blocked without impacting upon my ability to view actual content.

Opted out at Optimune. Now waiting to see if cookies show up during an LJ session, and plan to match whatever shows up against Optimune - and to look for other incoming as well. It'll be somewhat flawed, in that I often have multiple tabs open and can't guarantee sourcing, but I'm interested to see what lands that I might then see what it's storing.

PS. It's Omniture not Optimune, as far as I can tell. Did I miss something?

As to being aware, I wouldn't have been without your mentioning it -- thank you :)

what happens if I just go in and toss my cookies? None of them are listed as secure.

Just askin, this is something I don't think about much because I'm behind a firewall etc. I know that may not make much difference.

Mostly, not much. You won't know that you've previously been someplace.

You'll have to re-enter data at places like Making Light.

Other than that things won't be notably different.

Oh yeah, you'll be logged out of Lj, etc., if you were logged in when the cookie tossing happens.
