Some thoughts on Flikr

I don't use Flickr. Lj's scrapbook/gallery function is enough for me.

But I've seen it grow, and in some ways take over. When Yahoo bought it I was annoyed. I, mostly, stopped using my Yahoo accounts a few years ago (gmail handled my e-mail needs, and more conveniently; the spam is better filtered and things group better).

But this entry raises some interesting, and difficult issues.

Looking at it, I don't think I'll ever use Flickr now.

I've been considering trying out Panoramio... Flickr is sufficient in that barely way that reminds me of MySpace.

German law is outrageous here (a wide range of inaccurate content is simply illegal; you can pretty much forget hosting any web forum under German law, as you'll be a felon sooner rather than later). Basically, German citizens are locked down to SafeSearch-type searches because to even allow a not-sanitized search is a German felony.

And Yahoo is particularly flinchy here. I'd just say that Yahoo is passing on Germany's hatred of free speech globally, and consider all of their social-networking subsidiaries equally tainted.
