He thought us too smart for our own good, and thought being kind to each other was an imperative.

I'm sure he would have appreciated the irony that those whose humanity means that they don't actually need to read his books do read them, while those in need of his insight don't.

All heroes come to dust, just like the rest of us. This day has not started well for me.

for once the LA Times did well to write a fairly long and wonderful obit for him - an author - not someone connected to the town's industry or politics - to someone who not only mattered but did what mattered - doesn't quite fill the breach his passing has left however -
