I've been given an award.

The details can be found here

It's a meme, of sorts.

This makes the second time Writing Wrongs has had this sort of affect on me. The first was after I made a comment about food on her blog. She thinks me a better cook than I am (though she's free to let me know she's stopping by for dinner, if she want's to test this theory), and she said so, in head-swelling terms.

Which was nice, but sort of surprising (she was amazed I was reading her blog, it's a nice blog, mostly about writing, I commend it, and have reccomended it to those who are looking at writing).

But books, nor even food, are not how I came to find her. It was riding my hobbyhorse. I was googling for something, and a link came up. I followed it to this post We have a point of common experience, and that was, in a dark time, a ray of hope.

I could have chosen a golden version of the logo. I didn't think I deserved it. Not out of some sense of false modesty. I write for three reasons.

1: To share things, and to keep in touch with my friends.
2: To inform, or teach something (food porn is like that)
3: To make people think.

Since I am trying to do that, I succeeded. Medals, to make an analogy, ought not be inflated. If one does something ordinary, awards aren't in order. If one does it well, then some recognition is merited (even desirable). But a Legion of Merit for seeing to it the REDTRAIN missions are all filled, for three years running, is a bit beyond the pale, and AAM will do just fine.

So, now it's time for me to name my five nominees (they don't have to accept), blogs which make me think. I could post some of the bigger blogs I read every day (some of which spark comment here), but I'm going to aim for less well known members of the blogging world.

In no order of merit.

Congratulations on the award! And I think Slactivist is one of the most amazing bloggers out there.

thank you -- a few there I hadn't run across, and I like to find thought-provoking blogs. Not that I have the time to keep up with many, but...

2: To inform, or teach something (food porn is like that)
3: To make people think.

I stumbled across your blog via [livejournal.com profile] tongodeon's recommendation, and "friended" (which is a total bastardization of a word) you because I found it both informative and provacative, even if I rarely comment.

I agree with the abuse of the word.

I think I looked at your blog at some point in a comment you made on [profile] ariyanakylstram's blog (she being one of the few {in comparison to the totality of "friends" both common, and mono-directional} I know in person).

I don't mind a lack of comment. Having an audience is a good thing. Back in the day, when I wrote for a paper, the audience was passive. That inspires one kind of writing.

Then I started doing APAe, and that was different, more like blogging, with an interactive model. It's more satisfying, but it has different structure. Writing a column, is independant of audience interest. If they don't like it, they don't read it, but that has no affect on the number of papers sold.

For a blog, when someone dislikes what you write, the loss isn't of eyes on a purchased page, but rather the lack of "purchase."

So, to get back to what started this, lurking is just fine with me.

Well, you caught me waxing poetic about Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk (and the dessert my dad used to make with it). If nothing else, I know you're a better cook than I am.

For me, the only surprise is someone hadn't nominated you sooner.

Lessee... better cook; probably.

But I don't think of myself an exeptional cook. I just like it, and as with most things, passion shows. That I am a decent hand with a typewriter probably has as much to do with people thinking me a really good cook as what I put on the table does.

I'm not so surprised. It's the first I'd heard of the award (though it seems someone of my acquaintance has also been given one), and my readership is small, (the hitcounter says about 400).
