Fred Clark (whom you ought to be reading. He's a lot better than I am) is an evangelical, progressive, Christian.
He's also a pretty good analyst of religion in the public sphere (anyone who can compare Spiderman toys to Sampson toys by asking how the former could compare to the terrorist who invented the suicide bomb...) and talks about the recent column in Time about the perennial idea that Democrats aren't friendly to religion.
In the
first post he points out that it's not the religious whom the Dems don't appeal to. There are lots of churches which support Dems. Churches which support them as strongly, at least, as the "Religious Right" support the Republicans.
They just happen to be black churches. So maybe the problem isn't the religion, but the issues.
In the
second post he addresses those issues. It's abortion.
And playing up to the people who are against it, isn't going to work, unless the Dems are willing to say they are against it too, because it's a non-negotiable.
Once those two things are factored in... the "God Gap" dissappears, because it's not about God, but about abortion.
Never mind that the Republican Party isn't willing to actually do anything about abortion; except to appoint reactionary, activist, judges, they are willing to talk the talk; and that's enough to make the people who aren't willing to compromise decide they are better than the alternative.
As usual with good blogs, the comments are at least as valuable as the post.
