Blogs

I've been amusing myself playing Blogshares which is a fantasy stock market, with blogs as the companies in play.

What's been interesting isn't the money making aspects (since the game is free, and one has to be really foolish to lose the intial stake and go broke, there's not much frisson of risk. It doesn't feel like gambling). One of the features of the game are "chips" they don't have any, declared, monetary value but they are negotiable (the present "cost" to buy one is B$ 5,000,000). They also allow one to play a sort of slot machine (which pays off in things which are useful in the game).

One earns chips by working on the indexing of the system. Blogs, in the game, produce commodities. Which commodities a blog produces is determined by which "industry" it belongs to. The players vote on this, based on the blogs content. Good votes earn chips, bad votes lose them.

There are almost 6,000 industries defined.

I've been doing a lot of voting. Which means I've seen a whole lot of blogs I'd never have seen (and a lot of them were junk, "sdfsdfsdf" is running around Blogspot making link site, to raise google ratings). Some of them are great. Knitting Kitties is mostly about knitting, and spinning. The spinning entries are great. For the foodies of the world, The Accidental Hedonist is great. Pictures, recipes, commentary. It's very good food-porn.

I found the latter when looking at blogs in/around Seattle.

The highest priced share is that for Flickr, at B$4,403,772.81, and the lowest is Gaspar Torriero at B$.01. To tie them both together, the latter has a link to Doc Searls, who, as [personal profile] libertango pointed out this weekend, linked to this which lead to some swell photographs here

From one end to the other, it's all tied together.
