Tired

I have no real idea what day this is. It doesn't really matter. I have work to do. When I am not working, mostly; sort of, have the run of the city.

Киев is nice, but I am betwixt and between. One's mental space is defined, in part, by the things one does (if one is at work, the questions one expects are different, by way of example). I am, right now, playing secretary to the excercise director (U.S.) and translating for whomever needs it (though mostly in relation to taking care of the things he needs done, and those problems; some of which are protocol, which fall into my lap: Being a linguist puts one in places beyond one's pay grade, and has done so to me since my first mission as one, back when I was a Specialist, being asked to do things normally done by Majors [that was a small mission, and the Capt. in charge was acting more as a Colonel]. As a Staff Sergeant I'm expected to be pretty much self-starting and able to know where my limits are. I mostly do. Nowadays where I am likely to fail is to be insufficiently aggressive. This is better than when I was a 28 year old specialist, who was prone to going further than his boss wanted).

Everywhere I look the signs are in cyrillic, and when I see шоколад I get hungry. On the flip side, I've been turning American acronyms into Russian gibberish.

Talk to me in a week and I'll be better. I don't have severe jet-lag. I know how to avoid that, but my sleep has been restive, and my dreams tremulous. I am tired, in the way one is tired after a week of short-sleep.

The food is wonderful, the scenery as well. A certain sense of civilised behaviour reigns. I can buy a bottle of Tuborg, pop the top and not hide it in a paper bag as I walk through the park. I've only seen one person drunk in public, and only once have I had to force anyone to not be rude (some folks wanted to browse as a shoe-store was closing. They weren't goinng to buy, so I forced them to leave).

Tomorrow I'll have a chance to look for souvenierii.
