In some ways, if one is looking to wars to establish greatness, I'd have to say this was "The Greatest Generation". Henry Allington had a good run. He saw three centuries, six British monarchs,five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild.
He was, as the bible says, "full of years."
Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries
These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth's foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling,
And took their wages, and are dead.
Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned, these defended,
