The cover piece opens.
"Volunteer or ...
Volunteer or die? Just kidding. You won't die if you don't volunteer. In fact, you'll live better."
It then goes into a long, and mostly dull attempt to persuade people to volunteer for the organization. Where it wasn't dull, it was full of "motivational/teambuilding" jargon and nonsense.
So maybe he did mean that not volunteering would mean you'll live better.
